Week 2 - Response to Content

History of Internet

Before 1957, computers could only work on one task at the time, which was called Batch processing. Things started to change from 1957. To let developers work directly on the computers, a remote connection had to be installed. At the same time the idea of time sharing came up and it was the first thought of sharing the processing power of one computer with multiple users.

In 1958, during the Cold War,Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) was found by the US in worder to secure America's leading technology. DARPA planned a computer network in a large scale to accelerate transfer of knowledge and to avoid the doubling up of existing knowledge. This network was now called ARPANET.

In 1962, America discovered middle and long-range missiles in Cuba, which were able to reach the United States. The fear of an atoomic conflict was brought out. At that time, information systems had a centralized network which was easy to be broken down during an attack. Thus, a decentralized network had to be developed. The long wave radio waves would not work anymore. Thus, they had to use direct waves and the best solution for this was distributed network. In this way, the term "Internet" was born.
