Week 5 - Response to Content

How is the screenplay structure applied to the film?

There are five essential plot elements:
1) Believable/ sympathetic lead character
2) Urgent/ difficult problem
3) Attempts to overcome problem
4) The last stand/ climax
5) Resolution

Three Act Structure:

ACT 1 IS THE SET-UP :
Act I is a beginning of a unit of dramatic action. It sets up the story, establishes character, launches a dramatic premise, illustrates the situation and creates the relationships between the main character and the other characters.

ACT II IS CONFRONTATION:
Act II is a unit of dramatic action that goes from the end of Act I. During this second act, the main character encounters obstacles that keep the character from achieving his/her needs (what the character wants to gain, achieve or get during the screenplay.

ACT III IS RESOLUTION:
Act III is a unit of dramatic action goes from the end of Act II to the end of the screenplay. It is the unit of action that resolves story.

http://www.dramatica.com/theory/articles/Dram-differences.htm

In the movie, Rubber,
It was interesting that the main character was not a human being but stereotypically different character, an object, tyre. During Act I of the movie, tyre starts journey. It kills anything that it sees, a rabbit, a bird, a human… etc. However, the movie did not explain the reason why tyre kills everything it sees. I guess there would be a reason why tyre kills them and it will be shown in the middle of the film.

Week 4 - Tutorial Task

Task 1)What is cyberspace? Is it real? Where is it?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRHwJOScrIc

There are some of the different definitions of cyberspace. According to Ermel Stepp, he defines cyberspace as “the space of interactive computational possibilities, where computers and their contents are available to users of any participating computers, anywhere.” It is clear that such a cyberspace already exists today. However, Michael Benedikt defines cyberspace as "a globally networked, computer-sustained, computer-accessed, and computer-generated, multi-dimensional, artificial or 'virtual' reality." This kind of cyberspace does not exist today’s world yet.

To verify these two definitions, it is needed to distinguish between certain levels of cyberspace. However, both definitions commonly say that cyberspace is the space where we are in during computer-mediated communication. Level 1 is simply the mental map that we have of the information when we are using computers. Level 2 comes into being when we actively communicate with people through mediation of a computer. Level 3 will be attained when that latter stage has been reached.

Task 2)
I signed up to Cyworld for the first time in 2005, which is Korean social networking site that is really famous within Koreans. I was really young so I did not really care about Terms of Service. Even now, when I sign up for the new social networking site like Facebook, I do not really read Terms of Service. Similar to other social networking site, I had my own home on Cyworld that I can decorate and upload anything I want to. What I understand through the Terms of Service was that I could upload any contents without being controlled by anyone. According to the Terms of Service of Cyworld, it says:
제18조 (게시물에 대한 책임) (responsibility of the contents)
(Company can delete contents you post on Cyworld if they are applied to the following points, and the company is not responsible for that.)
i) 회사, 다른 회원 또는 제3자를 비방하거나 중상모략으로 명예를 손상시키는 내용인 경우 (contents that criticise or defame other users or the company)
ii) 범죄적 행위에 결부된다고 인정되는 내용인 경우 (Contents that are related to crime)
iii) 회사의 저작권, 제3자의 저작권 등 기타 타인의 권리를 침해하는 내용인 경우 (Contents that invade other’s rights or copyrights)
iv) 타인의 ID, 명의 등을 무단으로 도용하여 작성한 내용이거나, 타인이 입력한 정보를 무단으로 위변조한 내용인 경우 (Using other’s ID or change her/his contents without permission)

Week 4 - Response to Content

Social media sites have become part of everyday life. They are used by most of the people in the world and so they are used by a lot of businesses to promote their products and services. Businesses, no matter they are big or small, are flocking to social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to build communities of followers to increase profits. Facebook, YouTube and Twitter are some of the most popular social media networks that were created within the last ten years. Social media can give more opportunities for customers to access businesses and it can also enable businesses to interact with customers while reducing costs. However, these social media networks are free in terms but businesses still need to put their skills, time and other opportunity costs to keep them stable. Currently, social media is now used in the business world in two different ways; to improve and enrich collaboration internally, and to reach out to customers. ‘Customers interaction, monitoring as well as profiling are high growth areas as businesses have realised the power of consumer social media to improve brand recognition, enhance loyalty, influence opinions, and keep in touch with the pulse of the customer.' (Lukes, 2011)

Task 2)

IRC, which is short for Internet Relay Chat, is a chat system developed in the late 1980s by Jarkko Oikarinen in Finland. Since it enabled people connected anywhere through the internet to join in live discussions, it has become popular as more people were getting connected to the internet at that period of time. IRC was not limited to just two people talk at the same time. IRC client and internet access are needed to operate IRC. IRC client is a program that sends and receives messages to and from IRC server. Therefore, there can be many communications going on at once. IRC networks served more than half a million users at a time, with lots of channels operating on a total of about 1,500 servers out of about 3,200 servers worldwide. Internet Relay Chat (IRC) gave birth to the modern chat movement. IRC is the most widely used Internet chat system, and as seems often to be the case with Internet technologies.

Week 3 - Response to Content

"Does commercialization destroys the web or does it improves the web?"

As the world has been globalised, there has been an increase in foreign investment and cross-border transactions that put many businesses under pressure to find innovative ways to continue to market their products and services. Therefore, they started to put their advertisement on the web which is now used by most of the people in the world. However, there have been controversies about whether commercialization destroys the web or the web improves the way people do business.

According to Carla, she argues that advertisement on the web helps in people doing their business because it is cost effective, can be a market penetration, time saving and the content is timeless. It helps reducing budget when compared with printing brochures and editing them and websites stay open 24/7. Besides, it saves time since it does away with counseling on product uses and benefits. However, Carla also argues that advertisement is destroying the web, saying, it is difficult to attract customers since it is everywhere on the web and there are also so many same products and services. Besides, salespersons and customers are isolated since there is little personal contact between them.

There are still arguments going on about the issue whether comercialization destroys the web or it improves the web. There is no right answer since it depends on the way people use the web for commercialization.

Part II:

Since I am studying at Griffith University as an exchange student, I have been using different kinds of new communication technologies to communicate with my family and friends back home. I have been using mobile phone, facebook, skype, e-mail and cyworld (Korean version of facebook) the most.

I cannot really remember how long I have been using these technologies but it has been more than 5 years. I started to use all these kinds of communication technologies because people around me started using them. Everyone around me started to talk about new communication technologies and so I decided to use them because it was a trend. Also, once I started to using them, they were so convenient.

Most of the Korean websites ask people a resident registration number, which is really important, when making an account. And there was a recent privacy issue of cyworld. personal information of cyworld's 35 million users were hacked. I was worried about how my privacy was going to be used.

Week 2 - Response to Content

History of Internet

Before 1957, computers could only work on one task at the time, which was called Batch processing. Things started to change from 1957. To let developers work directly on the computers, a remote connection had to be installed. At the same time the idea of time sharing came up and it was the first thought of sharing the processing power of one computer with multiple users.

In 1958, during the Cold War,Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) was found by the US in worder to secure America's leading technology. DARPA planned a computer network in a large scale to accelerate transfer of knowledge and to avoid the doubling up of existing knowledge. This network was now called ARPANET.

In 1962, America discovered middle and long-range missiles in Cuba, which were able to reach the United States. The fear of an atoomic conflict was brought out. At that time, information systems had a centralized network which was easy to be broken down during an attack. Thus, a decentralized network had to be developed. The long wave radio waves would not work anymore. Thus, they had to use direct waves and the best solution for this was distributed network. In this way, the term "Internet" was born.

Week 1 - Tutorial Task

Hi, I am Ara Jeong. I am studying at Griffith University as an exchange student majoring in communication. I am from Sookmyung women's University in Korea majoring both in communication and business.

Since I only took two communication major courses back in Korea, I do not really have any basic idea about my major. Thus, through this course, I expect to learn new communication technologies to understand what I can do with them by leaning media history and theories.

Television

New:
Mobile Phones (SMS/MMS)
Computers, the internet, E-Mail
Message Boards & Discussion Lists
