Week 9 - Final Video

My group started editing from this week and made a final video. We used iMovie and GarageBand on Mac; iMovie which allow users to edit their own home movies and GarageBand which allow users to create music or podcasts.

Since our video is in News form, we put News format opening application with a background News music, using iMovie. Then, when people appear on the video, names of people appear on the bottom left in a News format.

Since our idea of the video we made was “new iPhone which has a real personality,” we needed to put ‘voice over’ when iPhone talks to the person. Thus, we used GarageBand which has application of converting voices into different types, such as female radio voice, male voice, mouse voice, etc. Thus, we recorded our voice and converted into the voice we wanted it to be appeared. When it was done, we applied it on the actual video we made.

At last, we put our message to make it sure that our idea is based on New Communication Technology.

Week 9 - Tutorial Task

Task 1 – Essay Plan

Post your essay plan: What is your topic? What is your position? Analyse the elements of the topic. Sketch your response to each of the elements. What conclusion does that bring you to? Summarise in 200 words. There you have a plan for your essay.

I chose a question:
Does the extensive use of computer/video games have an adverse impact on the health of young people? What are the most recent papers? Clarify what both sides of the argument claim and only then offer your reasoned opinion based on facts.

The reason why I chose this topic is that there have been a lot of controversies on whether use of computer and video games have an adverse impact on young people. Also, there are many research papers, journal and articles about this issue.

Pros:
1) Children can become immune or numb to the horror of violence, imitate the violence they see, and show more aggressive behaviour with greater exposure to violence.
2) Risk factors for health and with poorer social skills and academic performance.
3) Significant reduced amounts of slow-wave (REM) sleep

Cons:
1) Video games can develop the mathematical skills in children. Since for every game the kid tries to reach the next level, he will eagerly count the points that he earned..
2) It improves the player’s manual skills and computer knowledge. This improving technology is also providing the players a realistic experience of playing virtually through graphical techniques and improves the eye-hand coordination.

In conclusion, I am going to give a short recommendation of what parents can do to help children use computer/video games in a sound way.

Task 2 - Political participation

1. Sign an e-petition

I signed an e-petition for WWF’s Conservation Action Network. The objective of this petition is to conserve tigers in the world.

2. Respond to a professional blogger at a major news site?

There actually is no perfect security of privacy when using the internet, not only from emails but even other internet related things. Most of the sites ask for personal information in order to sign websites to use their programs.
“Your Email, Your Privacy and Your Blog”

http://www.blogherald.com/2011/07/15/your-email-your-privacy-and-your-blog/#comments

3. What is Barak Obama up to today? Can you send him a message about the importance of freedom on the internet?

Today President Obama struck a hopeful note in his address to the United Nations General Assembly on overcoming the numerous challenges that stand in the way of a lasting peace. He advocated for peace defined by more than the absence of war, saying: “a lasting peace -- for nations and for individuals -- depends on a sense of justice and opportunity, of dignity and freedom.”

4. What are the Australian Government's plans to censor the internet (the so-called "Clean Feed")???

Minister Conroy has announced that he will introduce “mandatory ISP-level filtering of Refused Classification (RC) –rated content.” The filter will be based on URL filtering of a blacklist of between 1,000 and 10,000 URLs. The list of URLs will be based on the current ACMA blacklist, and will be supplemented by lists from international organisations (probably IWF). RC computer games will be excluded from mandatory filtering until the completion of the R18+ review. Additional funding will be available to encourage ISPs to offer voluntary filtering systems.

5. What place does censorship have in a democracy?

It is classification, not censorship. Democracies survive and thrive when they find ways to look at things that are confronting or disturbing or ugly or strange. One of the ways it does that is through the classification of material. What we are really doing, of course, is classifying people.

Free Speech and Censorship

http://www.libel.com/free-speech

People frequently want to challenge any limit to free expression, but of course, one person’s sanity is another’s persecution and it is sometimes difficult to determine the limits, if any, of free expression. To say that ‘all expression must be allowed unless, if not curtailed, it will do harm to individuals, groups or society itself’ seems deceivingly straightforward, but it proves a very difficult guideline in practice. Only if harmony in diversity is seen to be of value to the group, state or other social body are there grounds for negotiating competing notional values of harm and distress. But democracy is arguably not harmonious.

Free speech is seen to be a social good in democracy because self-governance entails debate and weighing evidence among different constituencies, with different concerns and points of view. Thus citizens must engage in consideration of all the salient arguments. This right to free expression must be balanced among competing alternative rights and sometimes those competing rights have been difficult to assimilate or fold into a larger good recognized by society’s members as necessary for its health and well-being.

The best way to have a sound censorship is to realize the value of freedom of expression while maintaining a consideration of competing values, intensely important within given concrete contexts.

Week 8 - Tutorial Task

This week, we worked on writing a script and take a video of ourselves acting each characters appearing on the script. We divided sections into ‘In studio’ and ‘On site.’ Spokes person from Apple is Jasmine Danvers, Brandon is Nils Wiiburg and Reporter is me, Ara Jeong. Here is a script we worked on:

*B: Brandon (who gets a chance to use a new Iphone)
*R: Reporter
*G: Jasmine Cooper (Spokes person from Apple)
*I: Iphone
*S: Sam

In studio:

R: Hi, welcome to New Com. Tech. News. I am Melissa Gray. Today with us spokes person from Apple, welcome, Jasmine Cooper.

J: Thanks for having me, Melissa.

R: What are you going to introduce to us now, about the new iphone?

J: Well, the new iphone iFriend will change the way we use phones and table devices. The iphone iFriend has new technology that allows people to communicate not only with friends and family but with the actual phone. Each iphone iFriend has a chip inserted, that enables it to have a personality.

R: A real personality?

J: Yes. Each individual phone has a personality that you can change using the iFreind app. Each phone can source information from the net simply by asking it. This phone will actually talk to you as your own friends and family would and give you a great emotional and informative advice. This is my iphone iFriend, Sam. Sam helps me with organizing my work schedule, keeping me up with all the news and even helping me find recipes to cook dinner for my family. Say hi Sam.

S: hi

R: Now we are going to look at one of the lucky volunteers that won the chance to use the new iphone iFriend for a whole week, to see what his opinion was.

On site:

Voice over: This is Brad Wilson. He is 20 year old uni student, majoring in Communications.

R: There was a competition that was held by Apple to win the chance of using the new iphone iFriend for a week. This was created to get the opinions of different types of people and to find out whether or not this would be a popular new device.

B: Yes, I won the opportunity to use the new phone. I love the way I can change the personality and have intellectual conversations with the phone. If I am stuck on an assessment, the iphone helps me find right references. Even if I am having girl problems, it will give me good advice on what to do. Watch!

B: What should I do??? I went on a date with this girl named Laura. I thought we had a great time together. I tried to call her next morning to plan another romantic date. She would not answer. I have tried to call her for the last 8 days and still no reply... Do you think she is sick or she is not that into me?????? What should I do???

I: Forget about her. Pull yourself together man! Obviously she doesn’t like you. You need to move on asap. Research shows that if a girl doesn’t answer your calls within the first three days, she doesn’t like you.

R: So would you buy the new iphone iFriend? Email us with your answers at NCT@news.com or follow us on Facebook or Twitter.

We have not started editing yet but we have an idea how to make and edit the video so we are going to work on it next week. Here are some videos that we made some mistakes (making films). Putting these videos just for fun.

Advantages and disadvantages of proprietary software vs. free software?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68X9xI6R-QI

The main difference between proprietary software and open source software is that the proprietary software is obligatory and the open source software is optional.

Proprietary software is software developed by a supplier and made available for you to use under a licence. The licence sets out how the software can be used and usually prohibits you from doing certain things.

Advantages of proprietary software include:
1. Reliable, professional support and training available
2. Packaged, comprehensive, modular formats
3. Regularly and easily updated.

The main disadvantages are:
1. Costly
2. has closed standards that hinder further development.

Open source software is made available under a licence that allows you to make copies and pass them on to anyone. The software comes with its source code - which you can change to meet your needs.

The advantages of open source software include:
1. lower software licensing costs
2. no supplier lock-in
3. freedom to do what you want with the software
4. open standards that support collaborative development
5. freedom to upgrade software as it suits your business

The main disadvantages are:
1. it may be difficult to get support
2. some proprietary formats such as Microsoft Word's '.doc' format are so widely used that other formats may be less acceptable for business

Week 7 - Tutorial Task

Since I could not come to the tutorial class last week, the ones who did not come to the tutorial class last week had to form a group today. Thus, we have discussed on the topic and decided to make a video about the new iphone which has a real personality.

The message that we are going to deliever is "how the technology has advanced." With a news report form, we are going to film ourselves.

We are going to have a spokesperson from Apple and an announcer having interview in the studio. Then a reporter will introduce a person who gets a chance to use a new iphone which has a real personality. Then the person who used a new Iphone for a whole week will explain how it was.

Lastly, some of the slides will appear to explain about the idea we had, to connect this idea with New Communication Technology theme.

Is citizen journalism the end of traditional journalism?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU5LonkXbCE

There have been controversies whether citizen journalism ends traditonal journalism.
Citizen journalism is improving rather than destroying journalism. The future of both traditional and citizen journalism is the same, just journalism with no preface. Because there is only one difference between them, which are covering and sharing.

A professional journalist assigned to a story will research the issues, talk to the people involved, check the facts and craft the results into a story. Then move on. The job of a journalist is to taste the world, one news bite at a time.

A citizen journalist, however, lives the story. It is neither a passing interest nor something he or she was assigned to investigate. Citizen journalists share a bit of their own lives, rather than taking that quick bite of the world. That, however, does not mean that traditional news organizations cannot be part of the Great Sharing (Bentley, 2008).

To keep a healthy relationship between citizen journalism and traditional journalism, citizen journalism must constantly receive verification of correctness from traditional journalists(Collaboration between citizen and traditional journalism in reporting breaking news, 2011).

Week 6 - Tutorial Task

Windows Movie Maker is one of the great AV production tools I have used when making videos. I needed to make a video for the history class in high school including texts, music and attached each different slide of videos into one. It was pretty easy to make videos through Windows Movie Maker tool, even though I had no idea how to use it.

There might be some of the problems that I may have with copyright over elements that I did not create. For example, if I put a song as background music for the video I make, I cannot upload the video on the web, even though I have made that video since the music I added has a copyright. Thus, need to be careful with the copyright issues when making a video.

There are also the dangers of defamation. The law of defamation tries to balance two opposing interests which are freedom of speech and the importance of reputation. People need to be aware of whether they are defaming someone through their work while expressing what they think.

Is Hollywood having trouble adapting to the rise of the internet?

The internet vs. Hollywood
http://cnettv.cnet.com/ep-49-internet-vs-hollywood/9742-1_53-50093705.html

It makes Hollywood nervous when people have a fast computer and a fast internet connection because people will download the movies instead of going to the cinema. There are two opposing views on the question.

Hollywood knows how to use the internet to its advantage. Online marketing that they are using is one of the most sophisticated forms of any industry. According to Jeff Berg, chairman and chief executive of ICM, says that about 8% of the total marketing cost on the films goes to the internet. Hollywood actually builds its audience on the internet with spreading trailers and advertisement on the websites. Besides, Jeff believes that the internet lowers barriers to entry for new film-makers who make short movies and independent films (The Economist, 2008).

However, according to Valenti, president of the Motion Picture Association of America, the increase in use of internet allows faster downloading of films and makes the problem ever greater. He says 400,000 to 600,000 films are downloaded from the internet illegally every day and so the digital piracy has become a real menace (BBC News, 2003).

Thus, healthy use of the internet is required for both audience and Hollywood. Audience needs to be aware of downloading movies illegally through a piracy website.
